Give Your Eyes the Break They Need

Digital Eye Strain, also sometimes known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is increasingly problematic for both adults and children as our dependence on technology and screen time grows.

To date, approximately 80% of American adults use digital devices for more than two hours per day, and 59% of American adults report symptoms of digital eye strain.

The strain and tension put on our eyes when we engage in near vision tasks for extended periods can result in dry, tired eyes, along with a host of other bothersome symptoms. At Bettner Vision, we have several strategies and management tools that can help. Please book an appointment today.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Do you spend several continuous hours in front of a digital device and often experience the following?

  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Red, tired eyes
  • Double vision
  • Eyelid twitching

If so, you may have digital eye strain. Fortunately, there are management strategies that can help.

Digital Eye Strain Management Strategies

Reducing the time spent on your devices is the best way to relieve digital eye strain. However, in today’s digital world, that is not always an option. Other strategies that can help include:

We recommend that you follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break from your screen and look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This allows your eye muscles to relax, reducing strain.

Our optometrists can offer several workspace adjustment recommendations to alleviate digital eye strain. Things like ensuring your screen is an arm’s length away, adjusting your screen brightness, and correcting the angle and positioning of your keyboard and monitor can all help reduce strain.

Digital eye strain may be caused by a number of factors. Our doctors may make recommendations for specialized computer glasses or blue light filtering lens coatings.

Over the counter eye drops (or artificial tears) are soothing and can temporarily eliminate symptoms of digital eye strain, including redness, fatigue, and dryness.

Ophthalmology

Vision therapy, sometimes known as orthoptics, is akin to physical therapy for the eyes and brain. It is a non-surgical, customizable set of exercises and activities that aim to resolve symptoms that interfere with visual abilities, motor skills, and brain function.

Pediatric & Binocular Vision Therapy

Our eyes and brain are inseparably linked. Impulses continuously travelling back and forth via the optic nerve ultimately result in what we see and how we see it.
