Our Keratoconus and Scleral Lens Institute is one of only 3 in the entire state of Colorado. We’re knowledgeable when it comes to keratoconus. Visit Bettner Vision, and we can help care for your eyes.

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive condition that thins the cornea, leading to a bulged, cone-shaped corneal surface. Light rays do not refract as easily entering the eye when someone has keratoconus, causing blurry and distorted vision.

Some common symptoms of this condition include:

  • Blurry & distorted vision
  • Eye redness or swelling
  • Increased nearsightedness or astigmatism
  • Light sensitivity
  • Not being able to wear contact lenses

What Causes Keratoconus?

Keratoconus symptoms typically appear when someone is a teenager or a young adult. While there is no definite cause of keratoconus identified yet, research shows genetics may play a significant role in this condition’s development.

Keratoconus may develop and rapidly progress in individuals with down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and retinitis pigmentosa

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are large-diameter contacts that vault over your cornea and rest on the sclera, the white of your eye. These larger contact lenses are more stable, easier to handle, and generally more comfortable than conventional lenses.

Vaulting over the cornea and resting on the sclera helps transform an irregular cornea into a smooth optical surface, making these lenses ideal for patients with keratoconus.

Scleral lenses aren’t only for keratoconus. We prescribe them for a range of eye conditions, including dry eyes and astigmatism, and to protect eyes that have recently undergone laser eye surgery.

Corneal astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Glasses or contact lenses typically treat this condition, but traditional contacts can be uncomfortable. The lenses can rotate as someone wears them due to their curved cornea, causing discomfort and fluctuations in vision.

Scleral lenses are more stable on the eye, making them a good solution for patients with corneal astigmatism.

Scleral lenses can be beneficial for some patients living with dry eyes. These lenses create a space between the cornea’s surface and the lens, known as a fluid reservoir. This reservoir helps prevent moisture from evaporating, keeping the eye hydrated.

Some patients who have recently had laser eye surgery may experience post-surgery ectasia, a condition causing the cornea to distort, weaken, or bulge. Scleral lenses can be helpful when this happens because they sit over the cornea, helping protect the sensitive corneal surface.
